How a price must be shown to a consumer, by country

Spain, Sweden and Norway all say the price stated must include taxes, and Spain adds that discounts and extra charges are shown broken down. Australia takes a different route: it does not mention tax but makes it an offence to quote only part of the price unless one single price is shown at least as prominently, with postage allowed to stay outside it. Japan requires only that the selling price and any separate shipping be shown in a mail-order advertisement, and Austria names the total price as one of the few items needed even on a space-limited medium.

Countries not in this table yet

Germany and France are left out: the German price-indication rules and the French articles L112-1 to L112-4, which L111-1 refers to, are not ingested. The Netherlands is left out because BW 7 states no price-display rule. The United Kingdom, Canada and the United States are left out because the relevant consumer statutes are not ingested.

How this table was built

Every row is taken from the official, consolidated text of the statute, which LawAsked loads from each government’s legislation service.

Each figure is tied to a passage quoted word for word from that text. When the page is served, it checks that every quoted passage is still in the current text of a law that is in force; if a law is amended and its wording changes, that row is hidden until a person reviews it again.

The table shows the statutory minimum only. Collective agreements, awards and individual contracts often give more than the statute, and some countries let a collective agreement set different terms.
